The Basics of Local SEO
Local SEO refers to the SEO practices and techniques that are used by local business owners and managers to improve their rankings in search engines like Google and Bing. Local Search Engine Optimization is essentially similar to traditional SEO in that it also involves a method of improving a business’s ranking in the paid results of a search engine, which are usually referred to as “organic”unpaid” results.
Local SEO is generally used in combination with other forms of organic SEO. These include using the latest techniques and tools in SEO such as article marketing and social media marketing to improve the visibility of your business, while still staying within the guidelines and policies of Google and other search engines.
Local SEO is a much more focused approach to getting listed in Google and Yahoo, than is the case with organic SEO, since a business owner will be focusing his or her efforts on improving the ranking of local business pages in these two search engines. In many cases, a business owner will use SEO techniques such as article marketing or social media marketing to get their business listed in local searches. However, the emphasis on local listings is what makes the local SEO approach unique from organic search engines.
The methods used to optimize a local business site for local search engines include: using keywords that are related to your business (such as food service), using meta tags, creating localized copy, using meta descriptions for each page on the site, using the correct keywords in link titles, and linking your website to relevant social media sites. There are many other methods used for local SEO, but these four are the most commonly used.
One of the primary goals of local SEO is to rank highly in the local Google and Yahoo search engines. When searching for local business listings, a business owner will use these keywords for the local searches. For example, if a local business owner is searching for “cheap pizza,” he or she would search for pizza, cheap, pizza, pizzas, pizzerias, pizzeria, and/or cheap pizza restaurants.
Keywords are key when using local keywords. When keywords are related to the products or services that you sell, they are generally more relevant to local searchers. Using local keywords when searching for a specific product or service makes the search more likely to return relevant results, and will give better results for a local searcher than if the search is done using general keywords.
If you do not have a lot of local keywords to use, you can always use general keyword phrases for your local business search. You can then link your business name to the phrase, as well as any other words that describe what you do and what you sell. This will get more results for a local searcher and will help to increase your ranking.
When you do not rank well in local search engines, there are some options that you can take to make sure that your local SEO is effective and that your listings are properly optimized. One way to make sure that your listings are in proper relevancy with your keywords is to read through any Meta description that you are about to submit. Pay close attention to the description and make sure that it fits the search that you are submitting it to. If you are not sure about something or you do not have any knowledge of the topic, ask someone at the company that you are working with to provide you with a more thorough explanation about how this specific aspect of your business works.
